Miller tops rain-affected MotoGP Austrian FP2 ahead of Tech 3 duo

Jack Miller, Andalucia MotoGP 2020

Jack Miller led the way in FP2 for the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, the Pramac Ducati rider reigning supreme in the first wet session of 2020.

The 45-minute test started out with the first half of the circuit wet, while the second half remained comparatively dry.

Miguel Oliveira was therefore the only man to complete a full timed lap of the Austrian venue on a pair of wet tyres, the Portuguese posting a 1:39.484 that saw him remain at the head of the timesheets for the majority of the session.

Aleix Espargaro became the second racer to record a time at around the mid-point of the test, the Aprilia pilot lapping 0.862 slower than the KTM by the end of his brief run.

The track continued to dry throughout the session though, allowing Johann Zarco to eclipse Oliveira by over five seconds with just over ten minutes remaining-just in time for when the switch to slicks came shortly after.

This switchover point saw several riders head out for a quick blast to try and capture a top time, Miller straight away quickest out the blocks with a 1:30.838.

The Aussie continued to shave off time across his short four-lap run as the clock counted down, eventually getting down to his session-leading time of 1:26.475.

This put him 0.753 of Iker Lecuona, who just managed to pip Tech 3 team-mate Oliveria to second in the dying moments of FP2.

Alex Rins claimed the fourth fastest tour on his Suzuki, while Zarco closed out the session fifth fastest for Avintia Ducati.

Joan Mir was sixth quickest on the second GSX-RR Suzuki, while Alex Marquez and Maverick Vinales followed closely behind on their respective factory Honda and Yamaha machines.

Completing the top ten were the second official Yamaha and Honda bikes, this time in inverse order with Valentino Rossi slotting his M1 into ninth ahead of Stefan Bradl’s RC213-V.

The effectively-useless FP2 session makes Saturday’s FP3 even more crucial, although the potential for a rain hit third practice is a very real possibility-meaning FP1 could become the catalyst that decides who goes through directly to Q2 in qualifying.
