Wehrlein: ‘Sights firmly set’ on helping Porsche claim Constructors’ Championship

Pascal Wehrlein’s “sights are firmly set” on helping Porsche win the Constructors’ Championship at this weekend’s season finale in London.

TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team head to the London E-Prix double-header right in the fight for the crown, with the Germans being 14 points behind Envision Racing.

Porsche have incredibly been no lower than second in the championship all season. However, the team aren’t wanting to finish the 2023 Formula E season as second best.

Wehrlein is seemingly prioritising the Teams’ Standings now rather than the Drivers’ Championship, likely due to the fact he’s 49 points adrift of leader Jake Dennis.

He is mathematically still in the title fight, but only a miracle would see Wehrlein leave the British capital as World Champion.

Wehrlein’s season has disappointingly fallen apart in Portland and Rome, as his results have seen him lose touch with the frontrunners.

He most recently managed to claim ninth and seventh place across the two races in the Eternal City. What let him down, though, was that his title rivals scored significantly more points than him at the event.

His focus is very much on the team now, rather than his own title chances, with Wehrlein recognising that Porsche have a “good chance” of becoming World Champions at the ExCeL Centre.

“We want to finish the season with a successful result,” said Wehrlein.

“Our sights are firmly set on winning the world championship team title. We still have a good chance. We weren’t good enough in the last qualifying sessions.

“Our race performance, on the other hand, was always strong, including the most recent event in Rome. So, in London, where it’s also difficult to overtake, I’m hoping that we’ll perform better in qualifying and clinch the title in the race.”

With overtaking expected to be unbelievably difficult, Wehrlein could be in for a frustrating weekend.

Due to how hard overtaking is expected to be, qualifying well is set to be critical to securing a good result in either race.

This very much goes against Wehrlein and Porsche, who’ve often struggled to make the duels this season.

The German knows that the team need to “do better in qualifying” to maximise their race pace in London, which has often been very good.

“The fact that we’re racing inside and out is spectacular, of course,” added Wehrlein.

“Nevertheless, it’s not exactly my favourite track. It would be interesting if it rained. That would be very special. Essentially, the same situation applies to us on this racetrack: We know that we’re fast in the race, we just have to do better in qualifying.”
